Meet Rebeca

Thank you for visiting my website. I began my service on the Fourth Court of Appeals in January 2013, and I would be honored to have your early support of my campaign for re-election in 2018.

Experience is a critical qualification for a member of the judiciary.  My perspective is gleaned, in part, from a varied professional background, as diverse as the cases that come before me.  As a former first-chair litigator and the only sitting Justice with significant trial experience in both civil and criminal matters in both state and federal court, I am the best choice to continue to serve the citizens of Texas on the Fourth Court.

I am also the proud daughter of a Vietnam Veteran and his wife of over fifty years, having lived on military bases all around the country until my father’s retirement in Texas.  I am an honors graduate from Incarnate Word Academy, a University Scholar at Southern Methodist University, and the recipient of the Faculty Award from Boston University School of Law.  My husband David is now retired after a career in federal law enforcement and as a former police officer.

The Fourth Court of Appeals hears appeals of civil and criminal cases from all trial courts within 32 counties in South Texas, from the Hill Country to the border.  Because it is the largest appellate judicial district in Texas, I need your help to share with everyone that my judicial race is an important one.  Thank you for your vote on November 6, 2018.

Sincerely,

Rebeca Martinez

Justice 4 All

Experienced

Justice Martinez served with U.S. Magistrate Judge Eduardo de Ases in the Southern District of Texas, followed by a clerkship with Justice Federico Hinojosa on the Thirteenth Court of Appeals.  Before taking the bench, she practiced law for almost twenty years, lending the Fourth Court the most diverse professional background experience.  She earned vast trial experience as both plaintiff and defense counsel, representing individuals, small business and large corporations in complex civil matters including environmental and toxic tort, premises and products liability, wrongful death, personal injury, as well as multi-party class action litigation.  Justice Martinez is also the only sitting justice on her court who has engaged in an active criminal courtroom practice.

Please visit her bio page to learn more about her legal experience, community involvement, and personal background.

Effective

While on the Fourth Court, Justice Martinez has authored over 600 opinions, each case directly affecting a small business, a large corporation, a working family, a parent or child, or an indigent individual.  All of them seek a fair, impartial and experienced jurist who encompasses the necessary perspective when reviewing their case.

Educated, experienced, and ethical, Rebeca offers the judicial temperament and professionalism necessary to preserving the fair and just application of law to the facts of every case.  A member of the College of the State Bar, Inns of Court, the National Association of Women Judges and numerous other affiliations, Justice Martinez has been recognized for her outstanding service to the legal profession and to the public.

Fair

The Fourth Court plays a critical role in resolving the issues that bring parties to the courthouse.  Public confidence in the judiciary is best maintained by electing the most experienced, independent, and impartial judges.

During her term on the Fourth Court, Justice Martinez has reinforced the public’s trust in her courage, integrity and capacity to decide cases without fear or bias, and has kept her promise to not accept contributions from those with matters pending on appeal before her.
